Matthew Terrell Barksdale
Commentary:
Matthew
Terrell Barksdale came from a farm background but God called him to
preach. He first became a Methodist but did not feel comfortable with
that denomination. He joined the Church of Christ and began to
preach. He started 11 Churches and 9 are still in existance. He
always went to desolate areas to plant his churches. He had three
daughters with tuberculosis, one being Effie Childs, so they moved to
Sabinal, Texas area for the more agreeable climate there for that
disease. The family settled about 10 miles north of Sabinal on Hwy
127 toward ConCan, TX. There they founded the town of Worthy, TX and
built a church across the road from their farm home. They moved to
the town of Sabinal later. He was instrumental in starting Sabinal
Christian College which consisted of 1st grade through college. The
college fell on hard times during World War I due to lack of
attendance because the young men leaving to fight. The Charter was
moved to Abilene and eventually evolved into Abilene Christian College. |
